Lucas Torreira made the move from Montevideo Wanderers to Calcio Pescara at the age of 17, after being tested by the Italian team. Until then he had played in all midfield positions, as a winger and even as a second striker. It was Massimo Oddo, coach of Pescara, who made him a defensive midfielder. Since then, a high-level career, which he has never been able to maintain at the Champions League level, despite the transfer to Arsenal (28 M €) and playing on loan at Atlético de Madrid.

Style of Play

He is a very intense and aggressive player, despite not being very tall he is strong in duels, added to his level with the ball, it allows him to play both accompanied or as a single midfielder.

Torreira fits better in a direct playing style, he is very accurate passing forward. When he has a lot of ball, he tends to lose it by holding the ball too long and has a hard time understanding where to move after passing.

His good technique to shoot from mid-range and to take free kicks, have allowed him to have some seasons with interesting figures for a player in his position.

Without the ball he is a pressing machine, being very uncomfortable for the ball holder and balancing the game in defensive transitions.

Injuries

An ankle fracture in March 2020 left him out until the 20/21 season.

Projection

I’ve always had the feeling that Lucas Torreira has had no luck developing his career since he came to Arsenal. He has not found enough confidence or the style of play that best suits him. We’ll see if a great 21/22 with Fiorentina serves as a catapult for his career, because I think he has enough level to be in a league contender.
