World Cup 2022: Argentina’s positioning in offensive organization vs Mexico (2-0) – Analysis
Argentina’s offensive organization was poor in their 2-0 win over Mexico. The space occupation wasn’t correct, with a lot of space between the defensive line and the midfielders. In addition, Scaloni’s players weren’t well positioned to link up and many plays ended with up to 5 Mexico players closer to the ball holder than the first Argentina player.
Although Tata Martino changed the system to play with 5 defenders, at no time did this have any impact on the game, as Argentina’s problems were not in the final third of the pitch, but in the build-up.
Argentina will have to improve in this area, where Enzo Fernández can be a key player. With his time at River, his quick adaptation to Benfica and the excellent performance with Argentina, he should be a starter sooner rather than later.
